Basilica of the Sagrado Corazón

In the basilica of the Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart) located in Gijón (Asturias) certain cases of subsidence appeared on the land, translating into a gradual sinking of the temple. This caused important structural deterioration of the building, which was even at risk of collapsing.

GEOCISA was the company in charge of performing the refurbishment, which resorted to PREFASA due to the already long-lasting and continuous relationship between both these companies. GEOCISA required the design of a special mortar to perform the compacting injections. This mortar had to comply with certain requirements regarding the actual execution of the works, specifically:

  • It would withstand the incredibly high injection pressures without segregating.
  • It would be capable of being pumped at very low consistencies (7 cm cone).
  • The Basilica is located near the sea, for which reason the mortar would be resistant to sulphur as changes in the water table were to be expected.
  • The 28-day resistance to compression would exceed 25 N/mm2.

The PREFASA R&D&I department developed several prototypes taking into account the initial criteria for the design of this special injection mortar. From among those proposed, GEOCISA chose one which it tested on site. The result was a success, as stated in the publication summarising the action carried out and which may be consulted in our Communication section.
